Windy and a whole lotta walkin'

Day number 2 of the Washington DC adventure (it was actually day 3 for me, but 2 for everyone else) took me, Andy, Ava, Maddie and Hannah back on the train and down to the mall to see the monuments and memorials. Weather wise, this was probably the coldest and windiest day that we were in Virginia. Perfect! Maddie, Hannah and Ava were troopers, and we had a blast. We got off the train and hiked to 1600 Pennsylvania Ave, and there we found The White House.
We walked around to the back side of the White House, checked out the south lawn and portico (Andy was impressed by the security guard walking around on the roof with a rifle), and then headed over to the Washington Monument. Unfortunately the monument is closed because it cracked during the earthquake, but it is impressive none the less. And no, I did not photoshop the flags. It was that windy.
Next up was the WW II memorial. Very beautiful, they are also doing some work on this. In the background is the Lincoln Memorial.
On our walk from the WW II memorial, we stopped by the Vietnam Memorial...Then said hello to Mr. Lincoln. It is so much smaller on the back of the penny...Next up was the Korean War Memorial, one of my favorites. I love how real the soldiers look.
And then we visited the new and controversial Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial. Controversial because there has been criticism that it is not a very good likeness of MLK Jr.
On our way to the Jefferson Memorial all the way around the tidal basin, we stood in the bread line at the FDR Memorial.
And last but not least we visited the Jefferson Memorial, which was very beautiful.
It is so humbling to see all of these things in person, especially the war memorials. We truly live in a great country. And because Andy and I are a cool aunt and uncle, we hit Coldstone on the way home. A great day with some of our favorite girls!
