What it feels like to be 30 (among other things)

Andy and I just got back from a church planter's retreat held every year at a resort in Minnesota. It is a great time to relax and hang out with dear friends who we don't see on a regular basis, minus children! (Thanks Grandma & Grandpa O'Rourke!) But this year I came dangerously close to wrecking it. For some reason (and I still haven't quite figured out why), I decided it would be fun to play basketball. Not just shoot a few hoops, or even a little half court action, no, it was full court, all out, five on five. And did I mention I was only one of three girls? Yes, the others were men, including a former NFL football player (in other words a big dude), a former college player (another really big dude) and several other guys much taller, faster and in way better shape than me. I am pleased to say I didn't embarrass myself, but I learned the old body just isn't what it used to be. My lungs felt like they would burst and when I opened my eyes the morning after playing, I felt like every muscle in my body was screaming in agony. I guess this is what 30 feels like. Which is kind of puzzling, because even though I am not in basketball shape, I am not totally out of shape either. I consider my exercising to be in the form of Luke curls, Ava lifts and laundry lugging. And I live in a two story house, which means I climb stairs A LOT, usually carrying a child or laundry basket (one of the few times I am thankful Luke is UNDER weight!). I guess the reality is age is catching up to me, but the benefit of growing older is growing wiser, and now I know not to try and play basketball like I did when I was 18!

Totally changing the subject, toothpaste. It is an amazing thing now days. Pretty much whatever color, flavor, sparkle, or character you want, you can get it. All I remember when I was younger is plain, old Crest, and if you were really cool the multicolored Aquafresh. But Ava loves the Dora and Diego toothpaste, pink and blue, with sparkles. Luke REALLY likes it too, in fact all you have to say is "brush teeth" and he is running to the bathroom. He has an Elmo toothbrush and I have to pry that little yellow toothbrush out of his hands after several minutes of sucking the toothpaste off. Ava asks to bush her teeth at least 6 times a day, so that must tell you it tastes pretty darn good.

And finally, happy Valentine's Day to the all of you. I hope you have felt loved today, not necessarily by that special someone, but our heavenly Father, who loves you more than anyone on earth possibly could.

SO - glad to hear you got your ball on. We will have to get some hoops going at your house this summer, a little grill out, the whole deal. Looking forward to my next Luke curl or Ava lift.

Sara- I totally agree with your view of the amazing advancement of toothpaste and am glad to hear that Ava and Luke have found toothpaste that they enjoy. Finding quality toothpaste is important in the war against cavities, plaque, bad breath, gum disease, and the dreaded gingivitis. But choosing a new toothpaste flavor is a huge commitment. A few years ago I choose a new flavor in the Aqua fresh Orange and it was a mistake that stuck with me for 6 months. Sorry if I have offended any of your readers that use the Aqua fresh Orange but it just wasn’t my flavorite.

Talking about toothpaste, I love the Trader Joe's paste. It has Fennel in it and I love it. Don't ask me why...it's a little excentric. Out of the ordinary like the Dora toothpaste. I might have to get some of that. Doesn't hurt to bring back some excitement to brushing the teeth.
